  Singer-songwriter Bri Schillings, known professionally as Sweet Imperfections, is back with a new hauntingly alluring track that’s instantly been added to a multitude of our playlists. Titled “Ignorance is Violence”, it is a thought-provoking call to action for climate justice that is bound to pull on your heartstrings and fill you with motivation.

Written during the artist’s road trip in 2021, it stems from her experience witnessing the lingering smoke from the California wildfires — though the powerful passion in her voice can be traced back much further. Schillings has had a strong connection with nature since a child, finding solace in its protection and inspiration in its sounds. As she’s grown her voice and evolved her sound, her love for our magical landscape has only heightened. Schillings shared her inspiration for the track, saying, “On top of experiencing firsthand the hottest summer recorded, breathing smoke from the fires, we felt a weight of frustration and recognized our responsibility to take a stand. We had recently watched Greta Thunberg’s documentary ‘I am Greta’, which inspired us to use a clip from one of her speeches during the outro of the song.”

Throughout, Bri drives home the message in a full-throated alto that has similar qualities to Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine) and (as my son-in-law says) Stevie Nicks – in a good way. Bri’s vocals have the ability to make you hear the lyrics while still enjoying the music. Those lyrics are driven like nails. If you can look at yourself in the mirror and not say you are part of the climate change problem after hearing this song, you are genuinely too far gone. Ignorance is violence, after all.

With about an LP’s worth of singles released to date, Sweet Imperfections and Bri Schillings appear ready to unleash themselves on the world. It's a song full of emotions, and you can hear it in Bri's dreamy, melodic voice. Her voice reminds me of Miley Cyrus, specifically in her "Jolene" era of raw, passionate vocals. 

What I absolutely love about "Step Into Love" is that the song is minimalistic. There's soft, minimal instrumentals that add to the warmth and rawness of the song. It's just background noise so you can focus on Bri's beautiful voice. It feels raw and passionate and beautiful.

Bri Schillings recorded a demo track after the fight with her partner, adding a deep percussive beat to drive the tension. Her next step was to send it to producer Chad Shlosser, with whom she began pre-production.

Chad returned a sample of a gorgeous guitar melody after receiving the demo. In a dream, Chad Shlosser received the melody. As dreamy, vulnerable and organic as the night it was written, this song reflects all the feelings of its inspiration.
